The precious lace was developed and techniques have ripened during the peak of the middle ages. In that period many nobles came to value artisan craftsmanship and Burano lace was used to embellish wedding gowns, festive dresses and the more conventional silk tissue both for men and women. Household textiles also developed and spiked in importance.
Lace still today plays an important role in high-fashion. Many families in Burano try to keep up their families heritage. Living in the house in which they sell in so-called “casa-bottega” can also be an interesting experience to treasure. Taking a course on lace-making is enjoyable, creates community and helps this important craft and tradition to be held alive.
During the peak of the Venetian Trade and empire the refinement and skills connected to glass making were so excelling that it was difficult to distinguish between transparent murano glass and actual crystal. Venetian artisans were using glass refinement and polishing techniques to create transparency that when comparing transparent glass beads with crystal beads almost no one could tell the difference.
Today taking a class on bead-making can be a very exciting experience as its production involves many interesting steps and concrete tasks including the manipulation of shape, size, coloring of glass and pearl beads and the final assemblement.
You will go from theory to realize a real jewel with your own hands.
